No surgery is required for this method of reducing body weight. A balloon is inserted into the stomach and filled with a saline solution during an outpatient procedure as part of an endoscopy (gastroscopy) or simply by swallowing. The gastric balloon can be used in preparation for an operation or in mild cases of obesity.

This surgical procedure divides the stomach into a large, inactive part and a smaller part that continues to be used for food intake. The small intestine is connected directly to this smaller part of the stomach ("pouch").
